7 Common SEO Mistakes That Are Quietly Killing Your Rankings
By the RankMount team · Updated September 2026
After running hundreds of SEO audits, we've noticed something: most websites don't have one big problem — they have seven medium-sized ones. Fix all seven and you'll often outrank competitors with far "better" content. Here they are, in order of how often we see them.
1. Thin or Unhelpful Content
Pages that don't answer the searcher's question, or pad 50 words into 500 with fluff. Google's Helpful Content system is ruthless here. The fix: rewrite every page to directly answer the query someone typed — with specifics, examples and data. One exceptional page beats ten mediocre ones.
2. Ignoring Search Intent
Ranking for "best running shoes" with a page selling only one pair — that mismatch guarantees a high bounce rate and falling rankings. The fix: check what currently ranks on page one for your keyword. Match that format: listicle, product page, guide, or comparison.
3. Duplicate Title Tags and Meta Descriptions
When five pages all say "Home", Google has no idea which to rank. Duplicate titles dilute your click-through rate and your relevance. The fix: give every page a unique title (under 60 characters for desktop display) and a unique, compelling meta description (about 155 characters) that mentions the benefit.
4. Slow Page Speed
Google has used page speed in rankings since 2010, and Core Web Vitals since 2021. A site that takes 6 seconds to load loses visitors — and rankings — to faster competitors. The fix: compress images, enable caching, remove heavy plugins, and test with PageSpeed Insights. Aim for a Largest Contentful Paint under 2.5 seconds.
5. Weak Internal Linking
Your best content is buried with no links pointing to it. Internal links pass authority and help Google understand your site's structure. The fix: every page should link to 3–5 related pages using descriptive anchor text (not "click here").
6. Few or Low-Quality Backlinks
Backlinks remain one of the strongest ranking signals. If competitors have authority links and you don't, you'll lose. The fix: earn editorial links through genuinely useful content, digital PR, and outreach to relevant sites — never buy links from link farms.
7. No Local Presence
If you serve a city, and your Google Business Profile is incomplete or unclaimed, you're invisible in the most valuable searches of all: "near me". The fix: claim and complete your profile, choose the right categories, and collect reviews — quantity and responsiveness both matter.
